I play a 6-key large-holed Rudall & Rose flute in African blackwood made by the great John Gallagher in Elkins, West Virginia. Check them out here!įor starter Irish flutes, look at Casey Burns or Sweetheart Flutes. The website/discussion board/mecca Chiff and Fipple, dedicated to whistles, has a Flute section where people occasionally post instruments for sale as well at decent prices. They’re great whistles with no wait time and a good price. I also play a Killarney Whistle, a new whistle produced in you guessed it, Killarney. There are higher end whistles that are on the expensive side, like Sindt & Burke. He takes batches of factory-produced Generations and makes adjustments so they produce their best tone and sound (and he’s a nice guy to boot). Years ago, you had a good chance of picking out a Generation whistle with a killer sound these days, as more are mass-produced, the quality varies greatly. These are all available online, if you don’t find them at a music shop.įor more advanced players: I love Generation whistles that have been “tweaked” by Jerry Freeman in Connecticut. Clarke whistles are also fairly common and are slightly more expensive. Generation, Waltons, and Feadog all fall in this range and are some of the more common brands. The most common tin whistles are around that price, $10, and have a brass or nickel body with a plastic headpiece. They’re great in a pinch, for kids, or anyone starting out. I have a batch of Feadog brand tin whistles available for $10. Q: I need a tin whistle! Where can I get one?

#Sindt whistle chiff and fipple how to

Knowing how to read and recognize notes on a music staff comes in handy when you find an old manuscript with a tune written down! If you don’t read music, we will work on ear training & learn some basic music theory and reading skills. If you already read music, we will work to develop your ear training and listening skills. No! Traditional Irish music is an aural tradition it focuses heavily on learning and playing by ear. If distance and timing is an issue, we can arrange for lessons via Skype. Depending on proximity, I come to your home depending on timing, you come to mine! It can also work well to have a group meet at someone’s home for a group lesson/workshop, usually 3-4 adults. A half hour can be a good introduction for adults getting their feet wet. I find that a half hour is suitable for younger kids as they start out, gradually moving into an hour as they progress. I pulled the trigger on the Aluminum 2 piece Dixon with interchangeable heads.I typically charge $25 for a half hour, and $40 for an hour. But hey, it's a more flexible instruement and maybe the aluminum body really is that much better.ĮDIT: Appreciate the advice ya'll. So now I've talked myself into spending 4x as much.

Then I'm looking at those and see that the one with the aluminum body is about $200 CAD. But then I'm thinking, while I'm doing a 2 piece flute I might as well get the one with interchangeable heads since I don't have a low whistle. If I do, I think I'll regret the 1 piece, so then I'm looking at the tuneable 2 piece flute. I think I'll play it for a while, but I may not play with other people much. The thing is, the single piece, non tuneable is only $55CAD right now, which seems like a great deal. I'm planning to get a Tony Dixon, probably one of the plastic ones. I know I'll be happy with pretty much anything I get, but here's my dilemma. I like the way those sound, but I'd be down to try out something with a different sound to them. My main whistles are all Syn, and I've got an MK Low D. Any recommendations?Īs for what kind of sound I like, honestly I'm not too sure.

Killarney is the other one I was looking at, but they've got no A so I'd like to see if someone else has one first.

Any recommendations?Īs I said, high A is definitely what I'm looking for, but I could be persuaded to look at a different key as well if it's got a nice sound! I'd like to not be spending more than maybe ~CA$150, so something like Burke is definitely out. This is quite unfortunate since no one else seems to have a brass whistle in A, but gambling's not my style so I figure I'll find a different supplier. I was looking at Lir whistles, but cancelled my order after hearing there had been serious problems with their delivery and they weren't responding to anyone's communications.

Hello! I've been looking to add a brass whistle to my collection, and I figured A was a good key since it sounds real pretty and it's the only key I don't have (in mezzo soprano, I only have 1 low whistle but I'll get to that later).
